Bo Burström, MD, PhD, associate professor (2001), Physician, is employed at Karolinska Institutet since 2002. Professor in Social Medicine (since 2006), Department of Public Health Sciences, Karolinska Institutet and senior medical officer (since 1993), Stockholm County Council. Leader of a multidisciplinary research group (Equity and health policy) which studies social differentials and trends over time in health, health-related quality of life, morbidity, mortality, health care utilisation, social and economic consequences of disease and the impact of policy on health in disadvantaged groups in different contexts, using quantitative and qualitative methods. The aim is to facilitate equity-oriented health policy making. Current projects concern international comparative studies of inequalities in health and in social consequences of disease, and the impact of policy. The group has members with expertise in social medicine, public health, statistics, demography, sociology and health economics. Participated in several EU funded European networks on health inequalities research since end of 1990s, many coordinated by professor Johan Mackenbach at the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, professor Vicente Navarro and professor Carme Borrell, Pompeu Fabra University, Barcelona and Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, Baltimore. Work package leader 2012-2014 in an EU/FP7 funded research programme on inequalities in health (DEMETRIQ).
